Smart Textiles is an innovation initiative that started out as bringing two textile worlds together in order to create synergies which would take the form of sustainable innovations for the future. Smart Textiles is geographically located in the Textile Fashion Center cluster, on the campus of the University of Borås. Since its launch in 2006 Smart Textiles has undertaken over 350 research and industry projects and is an actively engaged in taking the textile industry from a supplier of cloth to a positive force in developments in society.
A massive congratulations to Zowie Broach from Boudicca who has recently been appointed the prestigious role of head of fashion at the Royal College of Art. Zowie presented her work and research as part of the second workshop, Material Engagements at the Institute of Making at UCL this July.
TFRC is one of eight research centres established at University of the Arts London. It is based in two of its colleges – Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and Chelsea College of Art, where the community of researchers explore how textiles can enable a more sustainable future. The image above shows Carole Collet‘s (one of TFRC’s directors) project Biolace, where she investigates the intersection of synthetic biology and textile design to propose future fabrication processes for textiles.
We are working closely with the people in the Advanced Textiles group at NTU throughout the project. Professor Tilak Dias was one of the presenters on the first workshop, and members of the group are participating in the workshops. Have a look at their blog to keep updated with their research. http://ntuadvancedtextiles.wordpress.com
Hi and welcome to the E-FIBRE blog! Here we will post updated on the projects, more about what happens in the workshop, and of course about all other stuff that we think will be of importance to the wider network and anyone interested in electronic textiles and design research, such as research projects, designs and designers, other events and workshops. We hope you enjoy and will check back regularly for updates!
